Manchester United Looking for a Replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo by Stephen Lars

Manchester United Looking for a Replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo by Stephen Lars

With an eye to the next season of the English Premier league and the other European competitions, the Manchester United is now in the difficult quest of searching for a player good enough to fill Cristiano Ronaldo's shoes, Manchester United's superstar who finally got his wish to move to the Real Madrid.

No doubt this will be a complicated task, not just because Ronaldo seems to be irreplaceable, but because the player who comes to take his place must have a high degree of commitment to the team as well as a very high level of play that allows him to adapt both to the group needs and to the demands of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Whoever gets in charge of carrying on his shoulders this great responsibility, must be fully prepared and capable to be the main figure who leads the team with the goal of exceeding the expectations of the club's officials as well as the coach, and who can develop and work as good as the Portuguese star did, which was one of the main reasons why Manchester United managed to excel in recent years.

Looking forward to that finding, the coach Sir Alex Ferguson has compiled a list of possible players that could replace Cristiano Ronaldo. Aware of the important decision to be taken, Sir Alex Ferguson has included among his prospects, several candidates that according to his point of view, are those that most meet with the team's expectations.

There are already rumours circulating about who would be the possible candidates to substitute that who was one of the main attractions in the English team. Several players have been mentioned, some of them are recognized worldwide and the others might be not as famous by name, but are recognized by their excellent job at the football field.

So far, there is a list of five possible replacements. One of the big names that has come to light is that of Samuel Eto'o; Manchester United has made very clear their interest in acquiring the services of Cameroon's player, but while Ferguson handles the recruitment of Eto'o as a matter of many opportunities, the offer of the red's team for the player's trade does not exceed 20 million Euros, offer that doesn't seem very attractive for the FC Barcelona, current team of the Eto'o.

Another important name that stands out in that list is the famous Frank Ribéry, who currently plays for Bayern Munich and for whom the team is asking for the big amount of 76 million Euros. If there is an agreement, Bayern knows that Ribéry would be a great loss because they would not find a replacement easily due to the crisis in the Bundesliga football. However, it has been rumoured that the French midfielder would leave Germany only play in Spain with the Real Madrid, the other team that would be on negotiations with him, according to some speculations.

Karim Benzema, another prospect in mind of Sir Alex Ferguson, is a French striker who plays for the Olympique Lyon, team that being aware of the many movements that are taking place in the Spanish football market, knows that they would have to let him go if the right offer comes along.

Meanwhile, Douglas Costa, a 19-year-old young man that plays with the Gremio, team of the Brazilian first division, is a talented footballer who has a great recognition in Brazil, where he has been called as "the new Ronaldinho" and has been mentioned as an option in several European teams, is another player in the Red Devils' sight, along with Antonio Valencia from Wigan, player for whom they're offering 17.5 million Euros. For its part, Wigan has shown no interest in selling the Ecuadorian, saying that he is a great player and they will hold on to him as long as they can.

*At time of this article is published Manchester United has sign Antonio Valencia. Karim Benzema has move to Real Madrid.

Manchester United - what outlooks for 2009/10? by Steve Yates

There are many reasons why Manchester United are the most successful football team in England - and have been for as long as most people can remember. And especially since the development of the Premier League, the club has entered an era of almost unprecedented success.

The Old Trafford Stadium keeps expanding - its current capacity is over 76,000 - and the demand for tickets shows no sign of slowing down, despite the economic downturn.

Much has been made, quite rightly, of the influence over the club of the legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. A blunt, at times irascible Scotsman, Ferguson has been at 'The Theatre of Dreams' since November, 1986 - tenure almost unprecedented in any era of the game. He has managed to stay hungry, determined and, most importantly, in total command during that time and will, when he does eventually decide to stand down, undoubtedly be hard to replace.

Sir Alex Ferguson's main attribute, for me, has been to keep Manchester United at the top whilst continually changing his team. There has been one spell - between 2002 and 2005 - when the club 'only' had an FA Cup to display from the major competitions; but even then they could hardly be said to have languished in mediocrity.

The Manchester United supremo has had that priceless ability of being able to move players in and out of his squad, without it disrupting team spirit or damaging the pattern of play. Additionally, he's shown a completely single-minded approach to moving out players he thought would be possibly past their best or simply not up to standard. Yes, he's made a few mistakes - Kleberson, Veron, Taibi, Djemba Djemba, Jordi Cruyff - but some of those could realistically have been expected to have been successful. Kleberson was the midfield hub of a Brazilian team that won the World Cup, for goodness sake.

However, I do happen to think that Sir Alex has a hard season in prospect. Not one where Manchester United is in danger of plummeting down to fifth, or anything like that. But I do feel things could be a little more problematic when it comes to running away with the league title again.

Now, I'm not just saying that because Ronaldo has flown away to his spiritual home - I'm sure they'll suit each other perfectly. Although a player of his skill - and the number of goals he scored - will not easily be found, it's certain the staff at Old Trafford will bring at least one player in to take the winker's place.

My problems are elsewhere. I do think there are a number of players who are just about past their use-by date. Ryan Giggs might have been PFA Player of the Year but we all know that was a sentimental award - unless he really was exceptional in the 15 league games he started during the season! Clearly, Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes cannot be expected to play much next season.

Then there are others about whom you can't be really sure they're going to be quite good enough. Darren Fletcher has come on enormously in the last two years but the same can't really be said for Nani, Anderson, Ji-Sung Park and one or two more. It was abundantly clear in the Champions' League Final that Barcelona's midfield was inordinately superior to Manchester's. Owen Hargreaves, hopefully for United, will return to something like his best form - but Michael Carrick still looks a bit of a 'flat track bully' to me,

And, of course, there are the classic Berbatov and Rooney problems. I don't suppose I'm alone in wondering what on earth Wayne Rooney was doing spending half of last season stuck out on the left 'doing a job for the team' and looking a shadow of the player we all think he could be. And the manager's faith in the expensive Berbatov was clearly demonstrated in the last few vital matches of the season when the player barely got picked. Personally, for all Tevez's enthusiasm and running around, the best pairing up front for Manchester United has to be the intelligence of Berbatov - who did have more 'assists' than any other United player last year - with the brilliant Rooney playing in his best position alongside him.

I am looking forward to the 2009/2010 season in the Premier League. Manchester United can be sure of playing their fast, flowing football and will, of course, be right there at the end. I do think, though, that, if they are going to achieve the amazing feat of four titles in a row, the manager has got quite a lot of hard work to do.

George Best - A Genius in a Manchester United Shirt by Patrick Attlee

George Best was probably the most talented player to pull on a Manchester United shirt. Indeed when pundits are asked to name the best players in history, Best is usually the only player from the home nations to get a look in. Best also arguably the first footballer to achieve celebrity status. He is still considered second only to Pele in terms of footballing skill, despite a career cut short by alcohol problems. A true flawed genius of the Beautiful Game, one can only wonder how different things would have been and what records he would have broken had he not succumbed to his extravagant lifestyle.

George Best was born on 22 May 1946, the eldest of six children born to Dickie and Anne Best. He grew up in the Cregagh area of Belfast where he was discovered by Manchester United scout Bob Bishop who famously wrote to Sir Matt Busby saying: "I think I've found you a genius." After a successful trial, Best was signed by Manchester United head scout Joe Armstrong. Best was blessed with a deadly combination of lightening pace and balance which made him the scourge of many defences.

Best's talent and showmanship donning Manchester United shirt made him a crowd and media favourite. He earned the nickname "the fifth Beatle" due to his flowing locks and film star looks. He enjoyed an extravagant lifestyle, opening nightclubs in Manchester in the late 1960s. However, he developed problems with alcoholism which would eventually bring down his career with Manchester United to a sad and premature end. One of his most often repeated quotes is the answer he gave to the question "what have you done with all the money that you have earned?" which was, "I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."

The years 1966-68 were perhaps Best's most successful in a Manchester United Shirt. Manchester United again winning the league title. The following season Manchester United won the European Cup after beating Benfica 4-1 in a final that Best also scored in. He was later crowned European Footballer of the Year and Football Writers' Association Player of the Year.

During the times that Best occupied the right wing, he donned the number 7 Manchester United shirt. As a left winger, he wore the number 11 shirt. In those days a number was assigned to a shirt and not to a player. He caused a furore when he walked out on the club in 1973, wearing the number 11 shirt.

Best had many accolades since retiring from football including being named by Pelé as one of the 125 best living footballers in 2004.

George Best left Manchester United for the last time in 1974 aged just 27. His last game was against QPR on the 1st of January. He made in total 470 appearances and scored 179 goals. He was the top goal scorer for six seasons in a row.

On the 25th November 2005, George Best died aged 59. He suffered multiple organ failure after becoming ill following his liver transplant in 2002. To prevent his body rejecting his new liver, he was put on medication designed to suppress the immune system. This obviously laid him open to new infections.

George Best will be remembered as a genius of the beautiful game who wasted his natural talent to drink. His dazzling appearances in a Manchester United shirt are what he will be most remembered for. His loyal Irish fans perhaps summed him up best when they said,"Maradona good, Pelé better, but George Best."
